AU Declares 2025 the Year of Justice and Reparations for Africans

Africa-Press – Botswana. The African Union (AU) has declared 2025 as the Year of “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations,” marking a pivotal moment in the continent’s ongoing efforts to address historical injustices.

This declaration comes as a renewed commitment to tackle the lasting impacts of colonization, trans-Atlantic slavery, and systemic discrimination, while advocating for reparative justice, equity, and economic redress.

The AU’s 2025 theme focuses on creating tangible, transformative actions, including legal reforms, policy advocacy, and economic empowerment initiatives.

These efforts aim to right the wrongs of the past and ensure that the struggle for reparations leads to meaningful change for Africans and people of African descent.

To drive the agenda forward, the African Union Economic, Social & Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) will partner with key organizations such as Amani Africa, FEMNET, the Pan African Lawyers Union, TrustAfrica, and the Tax Justice Network Africa.

Together, they will convene a high-level symposium on February 10, 2025, during the AU Summit to discuss actionable steps toward reparations.

This initiative is part of a larger global movement advocating for reparations, as many nations and institutions face increasing calls to confront and redress historical wrongs.

Reparations advocates argue that acknowledging past harms is not enough, and that tangible economic redress, such as investments in African economies, debt cancellation, and resource restitution, is essential for real justice.

The AU’s decision to designate 2025 as the Year of Justice for Africans is poised to ignite both continental and global discussions, driving forward meaningful action toward reparations and setting the stage for real, systemic change.
