Africa-Press – Botswana. Bank Gaborone’s Maun Branch recently donated toiletries and clothing valued at over P10 000 to the Maun Child Friendly Centre. The donation aims to support children who experience abuse or come into contact with the law, providing both material and emotional assistance.
Kgosikgolo Tawana Moremi II welcomed the initiative, praising the establishment of Child Friendly Centres. He said the Centres provide safety for vulnerable children and encourage the community to report incidents of abuse. He urged Maun residents to make full use of the facility.
Speaking during the donation, Bank Gaborone Maun Branch Manager, Tapiwa Samu, said the contribution reflects the bank’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and community support. She thanked the Police for their dedication to public service and encouraged continued efforts to ensure community safety.
Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police and Director of Gender and Child Protection Branch, Goitseone Ngono, described the donation as an investment in dignity, healing, and hope for children affected by trauma and abuse. She emphasized that the Centre provides a safe space for young victims, allowing officers to address both physical and emotional needs. She highlighted that modern policing is a shared responsibility and commended Bank Gaborone for its partnership. Ngono also noted ongoing efforts to professionalize responses to gender-based violence and child abuse, improve investigative capacity, and train officers to handle cases with empathy and efficiency.
Maun Police Station Commander, Superintendent Joseph Lepodise, provided context on the Centre’s work. Since its establishment in 2003, the Centre has handled 1,791 cases involving children. He said the facility has transformed how society addresses child abuse, creating an environment where children feel safe to report incidents directly.
The donation reinforces collaboration between the private sector and law enforcement to support vulnerable children, demonstrating how community partnerships can strengthen protection and care initiatives.
