BCP Discusses Upcoming Party Activities, Strategic Plans

Africa-Press – Botswana. The Botswana Congress Party (BCP) secretary-general, Goretetse Kekgonegile has outlined the party’s extensive plans for the year ahead.

In an interview with The Monitor, he revealed they are currently engaged in mentoring and coaching its 15 Members of Parliament and 130 councillors through a series of workshops, which will conclude on February 16. “The objective is to ensure that our representatives are aligned in terms of expectations, particularly regarding their commitment to providing quality service to the electorate, acting as effective party representatives and mobilisers, and holding the government accountable whilst offering an alternative voice in line with the BCP Manifesto and policies,” Kekgonegile explained. Additionally, he pointed out that the BCP’s annual programme includes elective conferences for both the Women’s and Youth leagues. He said these conferences are part of their ongoing efforts to strengthen the party structures.

Furthermore, he said the mother body and the Veterans’ League are also scheduled to hold their regular conferences, which remain integral to the party’s activities. Moreover, he said there has been ongoing discussion within the party regarding the possibility of holding early elections, despite the constitutional term being set at five years, with elections scheduled for 2026. Kekgonegile acknowledged that if early elections were to take place, there would likely be a change of leadership in some portfolios. “This is part of our forward-thinking approach to adapting to the political landscape,” he stated. Looking further ahead, Kekgonegile confirmed that the BCP’s annual programme includes a leadership forum in March and a constitutional conference in May, aimed at reviewing the party’s constitution.

He continued: “These events are crucial as we continue to evolve and strengthen the party.” With all these activities planned, Kekgonegile expressed confidence that the BCP is preparing for a busy year ahead. In addition, he said this year will be pivotal in solidifying the BCP as the main opposition and positioning them as the government-in-waiting. Meanwhile, he said the party remains deeply concerned about its performance in the southern part of the country. “We are actively evaluating the situation and are committed to turning the tide in these areas,” Kekgonegile added.
