Africa-Press – Botswana. International Women’s Day (IWD) and Month of Youth Against AIDS (MYAA) will, this year, be commemorated in Bobirwa Sub-district beginning of March.
The two national events to be staged under the auspices of Ministry of Youth, Gender, Sport and Culture will be commemorated in Mathathane and Bobonong.
The IWD is scheduled for Mathathane on March 1 while Bobonong will host MYAA the following day.
Speaking during a Bobirwa Sub-district Council meeting this week, chairperson, Mr Kgomotso Mmereki said the sub-district was pleased to host the two national activities.
At Blue Birds ground, Mathathane, IWD will celebrate ‘achievement of all women in diversity’ while also calling for gender parity within technological space.
“It gives a moment to reflect on women’s contribution to the social, economic, cultural and political spheres of our society,” Mr Mmereki said.
He added, ‘the day honours all women throughout the world who inspired others to do better, make a difference and effect change.’
During the commemoration, women will be encouraged to participate and involve themselves in all spheres of life.
The day is expected to be graced by Minister of Youth, Gender, Sport and Culture, Mr Tumiso Rakgare.
Preparations are also underway in Bobonong to host MYAA under the theme: Equlise Adopted from World AIDS Day 2022.
Equlaise calls for action to address inequalities and help end AIDS.
Selection of Bobonong as an apt host of MYAA was motivated by the fact that Bobirwa Sub-district is at 30.5 per cent HIV prevalence rate, making it the third of the 10 sub-districts as per BAIS V, Mr Mmereki has said.
MYAA is a national strategy formulated to upscale HIV/AIDS interventions and also raise awareness on sexual health and HIV prevention among young people.
The event will be held behind Southern Fried Chicken grounds where Assistant Minister of Youth, Gender, Sport and Culture, Mr Buti Billy will officiate.
