Africa-Press – Botswana. May 12 is marked as International Nurses Day and every year nurses come together to celebrate their profession, its history, and every nurse, past and present.
Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the last two years have been challenging for the healthcare sector and that has given them a reason to celebrate this day heartily.
Bokamoso Private Hospital hosted an amazing nurses day celebration under the theme ‘Nurses: A voice to lead-invest in nursing and respect rights to secure global health’.
Nurses continue with their determination to care for and bring comfort to all patients. They have made the world proud by standing up in the lead when the dark pandemic cloud filled the sky.
Nurses have made enormous contributions to the patients and communities, and an immense difference to many. They continue to show their commitment and dedication to make the world a healthier and happier place to live in.
When addressing nurses on the day of celebration, Professor Kefalotse Dithole said it is very important for countries to invest in nurses.
She indicated that the shortage of nurses across the globe is a great threat to public health. Dithole also pointed out that it is imperative that the country continues to produce skilled and knowledgeable nurses.
“In US, the government has put aside $10 million for the training of nurses because the President believes in nurses, and so does our President,” Dithole said.
“Let us make sure the government understands the need for nurses, efficient production, successful deployment and ongoing retention should be based on carefully constructed polices regarding career opportunities, development and advancement for nurses, and above all the conducive working conditions.”
She also encouraged nurses to always strive for human rights protection and uphold the ethical values of their profession and to respect and protect human rights in all their practice settings to secure global health.
Dithole said this year’s celebration aims to highlight the importance of nurses toward patient care in the healthcare industry.
“Today we are celebrating the global nursing family of 28 million men and women around the world,” she further reminded nurses that their profession is the beating heart of our health system.
