Africa-Press – Botswana. President Advocate Duma Boko has extended message of condolences to Ghana following the recent military helicopter crash that killed two cabinet ministers and six others recent

Speaking during a courtesy farewell by Mr Yakuba Alhassan, Ghana High Commissioner to Botswana, President Boko expressed deep sorrow and grief over the tragic loss, paying tribute to the victims who were serving the nation in their respective capacities.

“We learnt with great sadness of the recent helicopter crash that claimed several lives including high ranking government officials and thus we extend our deepest sadness and condolences to the President and the nation as a whole,” President Boko said.

He said Botswana stood with Ghana during these difficult circumstances and offered its full comfort and whatever solace required.

President Boko also acknowledged Ghana’s steady growth and its significance in anchoring the western part of Africa, further emphasising the importance of strengthening the bilateral relationship.

“We remember very fondly of the dawn of the Pan-Africanism and the contribution made by the likes of Dr Kwame Nkrumah who was a leading light and whose ideas and thinking inspired many African politicians and intellectuals,” he said.

For his part, Mr Alhassan, expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality received during his four-year tenure in Botswana. However, he noted that despite the long-standing historical relationship, the countries have yet to fully translate this bond into robust trade diplomacy.

“It is important to promote our trade relations from ideological fraternity to economic benefit. We must team up economically as African nations to harness the full potential of our collaboration,” he said.

He pointed out that Ghana could learn from Botswana, particularly in conservation, diamond mining, and tourism sectors. Furthermore, he identified untapped trade opportunities, citing the prospect of beef exports from Botswana to Ghana as a low-hanging fruit.

To capitalise on these opportunities, Mr Alhassan called for the establishment of a joint Bi-National Commission to foster closer cooperation and explore additional avenues for economic partnership.
