Africa-Press – Botswana. President Advocate Duma Boko has promised to enhance the skills of public school librarians to elevate the overall quality of education in Botswana.
President Boko, who considers himself an avid reader, and declared books as his best friend, informed Maun Senior Secondary School community during a meet and greet session on Friday that he started an initiative to donate books long back and would like to continue doing so.
He encouraged Maun secondary school learners to pursue their aspirations, assuring them that attending a public school was not a hindrance, as he followed the same path and reached the country’s highest office. The President advised them to be in charge of their destiny and work with their teachers and the school community.
“Parents must be part and parcel of their children’s learning journey if they wish to see change in the education system,” said President Boko adding that there were many challenges faced by the education sector, among them shortage of books in school libraries.
He motivated leaners to foster a passion for reading, highlighting the necessity of actively engaging with texts to grasp the underlying messages. President Boko said they should critic what they read because Botswana needed analytic thinkers to advance.
Acting school head, Mr Kefilwe Oageng informed the President that Maun senior was one of the oldest schools in the country and was capable of producing world class learners.
However, he said like other learning institution in the country, the school faced many challenges such as shortage of classrooms.
