Africa-Press – Botswana. Top local referee, Joshua ‘Sprinter’ Bondo has missed out on the 2022 FIFA World Cup set for Qatar later this year.
Bondo has been one of the leading referees in the continent having handled some of the biggest matches. He made lasting impressions at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations finals as well as CAF inter-club competitions.
Bondo was one OF 10 referees who handled the African qualifiers of the tournament and was tipped to make the Qatar trip.
However, the Senete native has not made the eight men list for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, missing his consecutive World Cup finals after the 2018 edition.
Leading the list is Gambian referee, Papa Gassama and South African, Victor Gomes. The latter took charge of the AFCON final match between Senegal and Egypt.
Zambian referee, Janny Sikwaze who was sent home from the AFCON finals after a shambolic performance in the group stages, has also made the cut.
Other referees going to Qatar are Algerian, Mustapha Ghorbal, Reduoane Jieyed (Morocco), Tesssema Balmak (Ethiopia), Maguette N’diaye (Senegal) and DRC’s Jean Jacques Ndala. Gomes and Sikwaze are the only referees on the list from the COSAFA region.
