Africa-Press – Botswana. The Botswana Chess Federation (BCF) will host the BOTASH Chess Championships on November 29 to December 1.

These championships will be played at the Sowa Primary School in Sowa Town.

This year’s games will have increased prize money as Botswana Ash (BOTASH) (Pty) Ltd has expended P87 000 to be distributed across all the categories.

Participants would be charged a certain fee depending on the categories they register to participate in.

BCF Public Relations Director, Goitsemodimo Makgatle, said 60 percent of the sponsorship goes to development that would include a coaching clinic that is planned to take place next year.

She said since such a tournament has been long awaited by people in the North-Central part of the country, it is an opportunity for them to come in large numbers.

Makgatle’s main worry is that women and girls’ participation in such tournaments is still very low and she advised that it is always better for girls to start playing the sport at a young age since women grow faster than their male counterparts.

“Girls turn into women quickly and their focus on sport fades away swiftly onto other responsibilities in life such as child bearing, marriage and other family commitments.

“The same applies even in administration role. We get few women who are usually interested in volunteering,” said Makgatle.

The games will be played on seven rounds at the rate of play of 60 minutes and five seconds.
