Africa-Press – Botswana. The political landscape in Botswana is buzzing with anticipation ahead of the 2024 general elections. The process of allocating constituencies among political parties has stirred up a whirlpool of contention, with each party seeking an advantageous position. The Alliance for Progressives (AP) has managed to secure ten constituencies, including the highly coveted Gaborone Bonnington South and Francistown South.
BNF Emerges with the Largest Share
The Botswana National Front (BNF) has emerged as the clear winner in this allocation process, securing the lion’s share with twenty-six constituencies. Notable among these are the Gaborone North and Maun East constituencies. This allocation places the BNF in a strong position, extending its influence and reach across the country.
BPF and BPP Secure Crucial Constituencies
Not trailing far behind, the Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF) has been assigned fourteen constituencies, including the strategically important Jwaneng-Mabutsane and Serowe North. The Botswana People’s Party (BPP), albeit having a smaller share, has been assigned five constituencies, including the critical Francistown West. The allocation to these parties, particularly to those constituencies, is seen as crucial in shaping the political dynamics for the upcoming elections.
UDC’s Share Sparks Internal Turmoil
The Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), however, has been allocated only four constituencies, a decision that has sparked internal turmoil. Despite AP secretary general, Phenyo Butale, insisting that all parties have agreed on the allocation and have cooperated despite some disagreements, there is growing discontent within the UDC. Insiders point out that certain parties lack structures or presence in the areas they have been allocated, which could pose significant challenges for the campaigning process. The UDC’s affiliates are the BNF and BPP, with the AP and BPF operating as cooperating partners for the upcoming elections.
