Africa-Press – Botswana. The Ministry of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, through the Department of Social Development, recently convened a key meeting to drive the transformation of social protection programs in Botswana.

Deputy Permanent Secretary, Operations, Mr. Kabo Moseki, delivered the welcome remarks, outlining the meeting’s focus on ongoing reforms in social assistance, policy development, and elderly welfare. He announced the department’s plan to transition from in-kind support to cash-based benefits. The shift aims to restore dignity, empower beneficiaries, and improve service delivery across the country.

Mr. Moseki acknowledged the financial and technical support of development partners, including UNDP, UNICEF, ILO, and the World Bank, noting that their collaboration is essential to building a more inclusive and resilient social protection system.

Acting Director in the Department of Social Development, Mr. Ben Semommung, confirmed that Cabinet has approved the National Social Protection Framework. The framework adopts a holistic, life-course approach, covering social protection from cradle to grave. He emphasized Botswana’s commitment to a human rights-based model, prioritizing dignity, equality, and inclusion in all social protection reforms.

The meeting highlighted Botswana’s strategic direction in strengthening social protection, ensuring citizens receive support that is empowering, equitable, and sustainable.
