Africa-Press – Botswana. Botswana’s culinary scene is gaining international recognition as chef Mmata Ontumetse prepares to represent the nation on a continental stage. Based in London, England, Chef Mmata will feature on ‘CAN Kitchen’ in Morocco during the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025).

CAN Kitchen is a 13-minute weekly travel-and-food series that celebrates African cuisine. Each episode pairs a renowned Moroccan chef with a guest chef from an AFCON-participating nation. Together, they prepare two dishes, one Moroccan and one from the guest chef’s home country. The show highlights culinary techniques, cultural heritage, and storytelling in vibrant host-city locations.

Botswana will be represented by Chef Mmata, whose career has flourished in some of London’s most prestigious kitchens. Currently serving as Chef de Partie at Mauro Colagreco in Raffles OWO, London, he has gained experience at Pied à Terre, The Ritz Carlton Vienna, Hélène Darroze at The Connaught, Dinings SW3, Jean-Georges at The Connaught, and Annabel’s Mayfair.

Throughout his career, Chef Mmata has rotated across multiple sections, including garde manger, garnish, fish, meat, sauce, pasta, pastry, larder, and amuse-bouche. He has delivered precise mise en place and service for both fine-dining and high-end à la carte menus, maintaining Michelin-level standards. His expertise in refined presentation, flavour balance, and guest experience positions him as a rising star in global gastronomy.

Chef Mmata’s participation in CAN Kitchen goes beyond personal achievement. It offers a platform to showcase Botswana’s culinary identity to a wide audience, introducing our flavours, traditions, and creativity.
