Africa-Press – Botswana. Botswana has reaffirmed its commitment to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC).
Speaking during the signing ceremony on Botswana’s commitment to UNFCC in Gaborone November 24, Minister of Health, Dr Edwin Dikoloti said it was imperative for the country to commit to UNFCC to save lives of people and also to entrench the national Vision 2036.
He said a commitment to the UNFCC was also essential to drive the Mindset Change initiative into a success.
Dr Dikoloti said committing to the UNFCC was also an ideal means to enhance resources, undertake evaluations of vulnerability and adaptation and also develop strategic plans that would help resolve some of the climate change issues in a sustainable and supportive ways.
“This commitment will enhance the health system delivery in the midst of the current challenges brought about by the climate change that continuously threaten lives and wellbeing of people,” he said.
Dr Dikoloti said the country was still grappling with some of the new health issues brought by the effects of climate change such as increased prevalence of climate related diseases and conditions like diarrohea, malaria, bilharzia and under nutrition among others.
For her part, the officer in charge from World Health Organization, (WHO) Dr Juliet Bataringaya said challenges that arose due to climatic change needed to be addressed collectively for a continuous outcomes.
Therefore, she said it was imperative for other stakeholders to come on board and make efforts in a bid to address the challenges.
