Botswana Creatives Call for Faster Social Media Monetization

Africa-Press – Botswana. Local creatives in Botswana are urging government to fasttrack monetization opportunities on social media platforms as digital participation continues to grow. Artists, content creators, and influencers are increasingly active online and are building sizable local and international audiences. Despite this growth, many are not earning income from their digital presence. This challenge has raised concerns about the sustainability of creative careers in the digital space. Creatives argue that without monetization pathways, the sector cannot reach its full economic potential.

Vice Chair of Business Botswana’s Media and Creative Sector, Kabelo Rapinyana, says the country is missing an opportunity to turn digital creativity into a viable economic driver. He explains that artists are producing high quality content and gaining visibility but lack access to structured revenue systems. Rapinyana notes that complex regulations and slow policy adaptation are holding back progress. He adds that reducing red tape in digital avenues such as streaming platforms would allow creatives to earn from advertising, subscriptions, and brand partnerships. According to him, this would also encourage formal participation in the digital economy.

Rapinyana made these remarks against the backdrop of a recent country tour by popular streamer IShowSpeed, which drew significant attention online and offline. The tour highlighted how global digital creators convert online influence into income, tourism exposure, and brand value. Local creatives see this as proof that Botswana has similar potential if the right systems are put in place. They believe faster policy reform would help retain talent and create jobs within the creative sector. Stakeholders say supporting digital monetization is key to positioning Botswana as a competitive player in the global creative economy.
