Yesterday, the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) held a historic final session in honour of Lieutenant General Placid Diratsagae Segokgo, who retires after 42 years of distinguished service. The event marked the culmination of a career dedicated to national security and the development of the BDF. The occasion was highlighted by a dramatic and unprecedented moment as Lt Gen Segokgo piloted a BDF helicopter for the final time. Upon landing, the aircraft passed between two fire tenders spraying water, a symbolic gesture of respect and honour never before seen for retiring Lieutenant Generals in the BDF.
The outgoing Commander was joined by the incoming Commander, Major General Mpho Churchill Mophuting, as they conducted the Final Inspection Parade together. This ceremony is a revered military tradition, providing the retiring General with the opportunity to receive his last General Salute. The salute represents unwavering commitment, dedication to duty, and the values upheld throughout a career in the profession of arms.
The event brought together senior officers, troops, and invited guests to celebrate Lt Gen Segokgo’s contributions to Botswana’s defence sector. His tenure was marked by leadership, mentorship, and dedication to strengthening the operational capabilities of the BDF.
The Final Inspection Parade also symbolises the continuity of leadership, with Major General Mophuting assuming command while honouring the legacy of his predecessor. The ceremony reinforced the principles of discipline, loyalty, and service that define the Botswana Defence Force. Lt Gen Segokgo’s retirement closes a chapter of exemplary military service, leaving a legacy that will continue to inspire current and future generations of BDF officers and personnel.
