Botswana Hosts Donor Roundtable Ahead of Africa Biodiversity Summit

Africa-Press – Botswana. The Government of Botswana, in collaboration with the African Union Commission (AUC), convened a resource mobilisation roundtable this morning to prepare for the inaugural Africa Biodiversity Summit scheduled for 2nd-5th November 2025. The meeting brought together government officials, development partners, and donor agencies to secure funding and support for the high-profile event.

Minister of Environment and Tourism, Hon. Wynter Mmolotsi, highlighted the purpose of the roundtable as bridging the funding gap for the Summit. He noted that financial commitments would cover logistical arrangements, participation of high-level delegations, and an extensive communications and outreach plan. The roundtable also focused on mobilising pledges for Post-Summit Implementation, encouraging early contributions to a dedicated African Biodiversity Fund to finance actions arising from the Summit.

“The Summit will serve as a high-level platform to provide political leadership on biodiversity conservation, particularly in governance, resource mobilisation, and Africa’s contributions to global biodiversity negotiations,” said Mr. Mmolotsi. He emphasized that securing financial and technical support ahead of the Summit is essential for ensuring the event’s success and long-term impact.

Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Sustainable Environment and Blue Economy at the AUC, His Excellency Moses Vilakati, praised Botswana for hosting the Summit as the first African country to do so. He described the opportunity as a moment of pride, highlighting Botswana’s legacy in conservation and its breathtaking landscapes. “With over 10,000 participants expected from across the globe, the Summit presents an opportunity for both environmental and economic advancement,” he said.

The Africa Biodiversity Summit aims to provide a platform for African leaders, policymakers, scientists, and civil society to address pressing biodiversity challenges. Discussions will focus on governance, financing mechanisms, and strategies to strengthen Africa’s contributions to global biodiversity frameworks. The Summit is expected to catalyse partnerships and innovative solutions for sustainable environmental management across the continent.

By convening the Donor Roundtable, Botswana has demonstrated its commitment to ensuring the Summit’s success. The meeting provided a space for early engagement with stakeholders, securing funding, and laying the groundwork for actionable outcomes. Officials stressed that the event will not only advance biodiversity conservation but also showcase Botswana as a leader in environmental stewardship on the African continent.

With high-level participation anticipated and a robust funding strategy underway, the Africa Biodiversity Summit is positioned to make a significant impact on both policy and practice, reinforcing Africa’s role in global biodiversity leadership while highlighting Botswana’s dedication to sustainable development.
