Africa-Press – Botswana. Swiss president Mr Alain Berset says as a beacon of democracy in Africa, Botswana provides the requisite stability and conducive environment for his country’s investment.
He told the media during a joint press conference he addressed with President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi in Bern Monday that as part of the African Continental Free Trade Area, the country could become a springboard for Swiss companies into the African market.
Describing Botswana as an important trading partner to Switzerland, he noted that the SADC secretariat was also located in Gaborone.
Mr Berset said democracy was under threat all over the world which necessitated collaboration between democratic countries such as Botswana and Switzerland.
In his remarks, President Masisi said the two countries shared common values including constitutional order, the rule of law, good governance and a democratic dispensation.
He said common tenets and values such as peace and stability had drawn the two countries together.
President Masisi congratulated Switzerland for assuming the United Nations Security Council chairmanship on May Day.
He pledged Botswana’s support during Switzerland’s tenure.
The two leaders revealed that their official talks, which preceded the press conference, covered issues such as economic development, education, research and training, culture and international matters.
Botswana and Switzerland have signed a declaration of intent on enhanced bilateral cooperation to boost cooperation in areas such as trade and investment, hospitality, education, arts and culture as well as agriculture.
They have also established a joint steering committee that would ensure effective implementation of the declaration of intent on health signed in February during Mr Berset’s visit to Botswana.
