Africa-Press – Botswana. Jwaneng hosted Botswana’s observance of the United Nations International Day of Persons Living with Disabilities. The event carried the theme, “Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress,” emphasizing the country’s commitment to inclusion and equal opportunities.

In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry for State President, Ms. Goitsemang Morekisi, highlighted Botswana’s ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) in 2021. She described the Convention as a landmark framework that promotes the rights, dignity, and inclusion of persons with disabilities.

Ms. Morekisi emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to implement the Convention through domestic legislation, including the Persons with Disabilities Act. She urged all stakeholders to actively support the Act and ensure its effective implementation across communities.

The Permanent Secretary also outlined several initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for persons with disabilities. These include the allocation of land on an Affirmative Action basis, recruitment through Affirmative Action by the Directorate of Public Service Management, and support for the transition of learners with disabilities from lower levels of education to tertiary institutions. Additionally, persons with disabilities are being encouraged to participate in government procurement processes under Affirmative Action measures.

The event underscored Botswana’s dedication to fostering a disability-inclusive society. Through continued implementation of policies, legal frameworks, and community initiatives, the country aims to advance social progress and ensure equal opportunities for all citizens.
