BOTSWANA OPERATES AS A FREE MARKET ECONOMY

Africa-Press – Botswana. Botswana operates as a free market economy, with the government refraining from controlling the pricing of goods, services, and commodities.

Vice President Mr Slumber Tsogwane said this during his address at kgotla meetings in Mopipi and Mokobaxane.

He expressed the country’s desire to attract investors without deterring them through price control measures.

Furthermore, Mr Tsogwane noted that the government subsidised fuel prices, contributing to lower costs compared to other nations.

He highlighted the crucial impact of fuel prices on various aspects of the economy, from transportation expenses to the prices of goods in supermarkets.

The Vice President also mentioned the government’s efforts in subsidising power prices, offering a standard connection fee of P5 000 for citizens.

This emphasis on affordable power aimed to facilitate an easier environment for conducting business and emphasised the significance of continuous and reliable power supply for businesses.

Moreover, Mr Tsogwane stressed the vital role of mines in uplifting local communities in Boteti.

He cited specific examples of community development projects funded by mining companies, including expansion of the Moremaoto Clinic and support for local educational infrastructure, such as the Kedia kgotla offices and Letlhakane hospital maternity wing.

Mr Tsogwane dismissed claims by some residents that mines operating in the area failed to contribute to the development, instead, he said that mines in Boteti had indeed contributed to local development.

The Vice President was reponding to concerns raised by community members, such as high prices of goods and the need for boarding facilities at Mopipi Junior Secondary School.
