Africa-Press – Botswana. The Botswana government is intensifying its efforts to address a rising gambling crisis, with officials highlighting the dangers of unregulated betting, particularly among youth.
During the launch of a new national report, Hon. Tiroeaone Ntsima, the Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, emphasized the need for immediate action to curb addiction and prevent financial hardships.
He stated, “Our goal is not to eliminate gambling but to protect those who are most at risk.”
Ntsima pointed out that the issue has escalated beyond mere entertainment to become a significant social problem. The research presented reveals a human side to the crisis, illustrating the impact on individuals and families rather than just presenting dry statistics.
“Online and illegal gambling platforms present serious dangers, especially to young people, as they exploit their vulnerabilities and lack safeguards to prevent addiction,” he further warned.
“Without intervention, Botswana risked a surge in addiction and financial instability among its youth.”
Over 850,000 Batswana Active Gamblers
Recent data from the Botswana Gambling Authority and Integrated Research Hub reveal a concerning trend: approximately 36.6% of the population, or around 850,000 individuals, are currently engaged in gambling.
Alarmingly, over 20% of these gamblers are underage, with some starting as young as 10 through informal games that involve small stakes.
The demographics show that young adults aged 21 to 35 represent 56% of active gamblers. Problem gambling affects 6.7% of the overall population, and this figure rises to 12% among those participating in illegal gambling platforms.
A significant factor contributing to this issue is unemployment, as 42% of those with gambling problems are currently jobless.
In light of these troubling statistics, authorities are considering a comprehensive approach that includes stricter regulations, awareness campaigns, counselling services, and programs aimed at economic empowerment.
