Africa-Press – Botswana. The Local Organising Committee tasked to prepare for the Davis Cup Group V is working round the clock to deliver a successful tournament to be held at the National Tennis Centre from July 17 to 20.
The last time Botswana hosted the tournament was 19 years ago.
This time around 15 countries including hosts, Congo, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Gabon, Lesotho, Libya, Madagascar, Mauritius,Mauritania Mozambique, Seychelles, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, will take part in the tournament. Speaking on behalf of Botswana Tennis Association (BTA), Oaitse Thipe said since the Davis Cup was a tournament of the World Tennis Association, it was important for the hosts to do everything possible to deliver a memorable event.
He said the countries would be competing for two spots for promotion to Africa Group IV, and therefore the tournament was expected to be very competitive.
He promised that Botswana would field their best line up, including some players that were currently based in the United States of America.
Thipe said foreign-based players would soon arrive to join the rest of the team in the training camp to start preparing for the tournament.
Thipe stated that some of the courts at the National Tennis Centre would be revamped to meet the international playing standard.
He pointed out that there would be close to 30 line judges officiating at the tournament, as well as eight officials.
“We will also have our own officials taking part in the tournament and about 40 ball boys who will be helping in the tournament,” he said.
