Botswana Reviews Injectable HIV Prevention Drug Lenacapavir

Africa-Press – Botswana. The Ministry of Health has confirmed that Botswana will carry out its own due diligence before considering a national rollout of lenacapavir, an injectable drug designed to prevent HIV. Health Minister Dr Stephen Modise told YaronaFM News that the government will rigorously test and assess the drug locally to ensure both its safety and effectiveness for Batswana.

Lenacapavir has drawn global attention for its potential to expand HIV prevention. World Health Organisation Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus recently described the drug as a critical tool in broadening access to effective HIV prevention methods worldwide. The injectable treatment has been studied in multiple clinical trials, showing promising outcomes. In one major study, no HIV infections were recorded among women who received the injection. Other studies also demonstrated strong protective effects across different population groups.

The Ministry of Health emphasized that local evaluation is essential before introducing any new medication nationwide. Officials highlighted that while global trial results are encouraging, Botswana’s health authorities must confirm that lenacapavir is suitable for local conditions, including dosing schedules, storage requirements, and population-specific responses.

Lenacapavir represents a potential advancement in HIV prevention strategies. Unlike daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), the injectable form requires less frequent administration, which could improve adherence and overall protection. Government authorities said they will consult with health experts, clinicians, and community stakeholders as part of the review process.

The Ministry has not announced a timeline for the completion of local trials or regulatory approval. However, Dr Modise stressed that ensuring safety, effectiveness, and accessibility remains the government’s top priority. Botswana’s careful approach underscores its commitment to providing reliable HIV prevention options while maintaining public trust in national health initiatives.
