Botswana Seeks to Deepen Diplomatic Ties with Bulgaria

Africa-Press – Botswana. Botswana seeks to strengthen diplomatic relations with Bulgaria, a member of the European Union, President Advocate Duma Boko has said.

Speaking during a courtesy call by former Bulgarian president, Mr Petar Stoyanov in Gaborone yesterday President Boko said although the two countries’ diplomatic relations dated far back to the early 1970s, they had not yielded fruitful outcomes. The president said the two countries in the past had discussion on potential collaboration, unfortunately a Memorandum of Understanding was never signed.

As such, he said the government was poised to develop the relations further, adding that the country remained stable, peaceful and developing, and was keen on attracting reputable investors across the globe. President Boko further described the visiting Bulgarian statesman as a friend who stood by him and believed in his abilities to lead this country someday.

He said it was not Mr Stoyanov’s first visit to the country, having once visited when President Boko was on a spirited campaign to become the president in 2019 and even attended a political rally in Thamaga to show his support.

Mr Stoyanov who is also the president of the Centre for Global Dialogue and Collaboration (CGDC) encouraged Botswana to exploit the vast EU market emphasising its potential for the country’s economic growth.

“It is important to develop your relations with the EU,” he said, and declared his availability to assist the country deepen its diplomatic relations with both Bulgaria and the EU.

Furthermore, Mr Stoyanov wished President Boko success during his tenure, noting that they met about 12 years ago when he had invited President Boko to deliver a speech at the CGDC conference, adding that it was at the conference that he realised Mr Boko’s qualities. Mr Stoyanov who started as an attorney before venturing into politics served as the President of Bulgaria from 1997 to 2002.
