Africa-Press – Botswana. According to the National Statistics Agency, in the third quarter of 2023, Botswana’s economic growth fell by 7.3%, closing at $4.6 billion, compared to $5 billion in the second quarter.

Nevertheless, real GDP for the third quarter of 2023 increased by 0.5% compared to the 5% growth recorded in the same quarter of the previous year.

“During the quarter under review, public administration and defense became the main contributor to GDP at 17.3%, followed by mines and quarries at 14.4%,” specifies the agency, indicating that all other industries recorded positive growths of over 1.3%, except mining, water and power and diamond traders which declined by 9.2, 9 respectively.8 and 20.4%.

On the other hand, the agriculture, forestry and fishing sector increased by 2% in real value during the third quarter, notes the National Statistics Agency.

Botswana’s GDP growth is expected to slow to 4% for 2023, economists say, supported by a forecast of higher economic activity in the liberalized beef sector, a rise in diamond prices and increased production. of copper.

This forecast depends on the accelerated implementation of the government’s economic recovery and transformation plan, the agency said.

Furthermore, according to the report “Unemployment, inflation, inequality, household debt and digital inequality” recently released by the World Economic Forum (WEF), shows that unemployment represents the most pressing threat to Botswana in 2024.

This report highlights Botswana’s growing vulnerability to the impact of disinformation, seen as the most serious global risk over the next two years.
