Africa-Press – Botswana. The office of the Ombudsman will host the second International Ombud expo from July 29 to August 2, in Gaborone, says Advocate Stephen Tiroyakgosi.

The expo will be delivered under the theme: Trusted Institutions: Righting Injustices, Bolstering Quality Governance.

Briefing the media in Gaborone on Tuesday, Adv. Tiroyakgosi said the expo would bring together over 500 Ombud offices, human rights bodies, grievance handlers, integrity organisations and related oversight and governance institutions from over 100 countries.

He said the expo was a follow up to the initial one that was held in Abuja, Nigeria, in 2019. He said due to COVID-19 the exposition was halted during the previous few years.

Adv. Tiroyakgosi said oversight agencies were intended to promote governance in the public sector in order to ensure that service delivery was delivered in accordance with the tenets of good public administration while promoting compliance with the law and democracy.

He said they believed that they would gain from hosting the expo, as most members of the public did not appreciate oversight agencies. He urged Batswana to attend the expo in large numbers, explaining that the expo would present them with the opportunity to learn about different oversight agencies both internally and externally.

In addition, he said the expo would provide a networking opportunity for oversight agencies and for them to showcase best practices.

He said the expo would have a special session dubbed ‘celebrating pioneers’ in the ombuds profession. Furthermore, he said there would be various workshops with experts from across the globe covering topics such as strengthening human rights institutions, the desirability of the ombudsman and grievance handlers and creating a circle of integrity within and outside government.

Adv. Tiroyakgosi also said there would be a special session on ensuring peace in Africa through a session called ‘Silencing the guns in Africa and the AU Agenda 2063’. Another interesting session, he said was called ‘Watching the Watchers’ which was meant for oversight agencies to introspect and retrospect on how they were doing.
