Botswana to Prevail Despite Diamond Market Slump

Africa-Press – Botswana. President Advocate Duma Boko has expressed confidence that Botswana will triumph amid the country’s current economic outlook affected by the sustained decline in diamonds sales.

Briefing the media following his recent international engagements in United States of America, Hungary and Angola, President Boko encouraged the nation to remain hopeful, stating that government was working to establish its position and assert its rightful place in the global affairs.

He said Botswana’s participation at the Jewellers Circular Keystone (JCK) diamond show in America availed a perfect platform for the country to champion its diamond legacy and challenge laboratory grown diamonds alternatives. The JCK show, the President said was an opportunity for Botswana to share its successful diamond story and reinforce market confidence on natural and ethically mined gem stones.

“Botswana is now well known at the global governing table for diamond trade and the world will once again show confidence in the value of natural diamonds and their positive impact on the livelihoods of the nation,” he said.

President Boko highlighted that Botswana was alive to the fact that global diamond industry was navigating a period of profound transformation as demand pattern were shifting, driven by consumer value especially among the millennial market.

To that effect, he said government was thus betting on diamonds to make a big recovery in late 2025, adding that key to the market rebound would be the newly introduced diamond traceability which would establish all above 1 carat diamond to their single country of origin listed on the digital block chain.

While also growing other industries like tourism, agriculture, manufacturing and energy, President Boko highlighted that digitalisation would also play a key role in the country’s journey to economic stability. He said in an endeavour to fully attain economic diversification and sustainable economic development, government made a commitment toward rolling out services digitally through investing in digitalisation and innovation.

“Our approach towards digital transformation has been to activate the entire country to achieve this common goal,” said President Boko.

With regard to the Hungary official visit, he said despite nurturing the bilateral relations between the two countries, an agreement was reached between the International Judo Federation (IJF) and government for the establishment of a Judo training facility centre in Dukwi. The two countries, President Boko said also agreed to collaborate on key areas such as agro-processing, education and tourism.

In addition, he applauded Botswana’s participation at the just ended US –Africa Business summit in Angola, adding that he had a tête-à-tête with his Angolan counterpart during which Angola offered Botswana a 30 per cent stake at the Lobito oil and petroleum refinery in Angola.
