Africa-Press – Botswana. A total of 150 breeding dairy goats and 92 breeding beef cattle arrived today from Australia. Receiving the consignment at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport, President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi said the government was working towards making Botswana the backbone of quality breeding animals and germplasm sourced from world-renowned breeders.

“This is a national project aimed at reversing the declining national heard and improving its genetic merit using Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) and genomics,” he said.

The cattle compromise of the following breeds:

Black Angus: 2 bulls and 6 heifers

-Red Angus: 6 heifers

Red Brahman: 1 bull and 5 heifers

• Charolais: 5 heifers

• Red Factor Charolais: 2 bulls and 4 heifers

• Droughtmaster: 5 bulls and 13 heifers (1 heifer donated)

• Limousin: 3 bulls and 4 heifers

• Murray Grey: 1 bull (donated) and 3 heifers

• Santa Gertrudis: 5 heifers

• Simmental: 4 bulls (including calf) and 5 heifers

• Shorthorn: 2 bull and 2 heifers

• Wagyu: 4 bulls and 8 heifers.

The dairy goats include the following:

• Saanen: 45 Does and 5 bucks

• British Alpine: 45 Does and 5 bucks

• Toggenberg: 41 Does and 5 bucks

• Nubian goats: 3 Does and 1 buck
