Africa-Press – Botswana. In a move towards enhancing economic growth and innovation, Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN) has entered into a transformative Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Agreement (MoA) with GISPlan.
“This partnership will be pivotal in our mission to become the most impactful university in Botswana and to drive sustainable development in agriculture and natural resources,” said BUAN Vice Chancellor Professor Ketlhatlogile Mosepele at the signing ceremony in Gaborone recently.
He said the pioneering alliance was a commitment to fostering collaboration aimed at elevating both academic and research capabilities between BUAN and GISPlan, along with its affiliated companies, including Intellectus Campus, EMP Geneses Group and Organic Fertiliser Manufacturers Botswana (OFMB).
Professor Mosepele said, ‘through this agreement, we seek to optimise the value of agricultural production and natural resource utilisation, allowing us to tap into a staggering US$130 trillion global market,’ highlighting the tremendous economic opportunities that lie ahead for Botswana in the sustainable resource sector.
The Vice Chancellor expressed enthusiasm for the strategic partnership, stating that with dynamic collaborators, there were no limits to what could be achieved in positioning BUAN among Africa’s top institutions.
Elaborating on BUAN’s strategic plan, Professor Mosepele highlighted the university’s commitment to producing graduates with practical skills necessary to tackle the challenges of the green economy and renewable energy.
“Our ethos is deeply steeped in the production of graduates equipped with practical skills to address the challenges of the green economy and renewable energy,” he said.
With partnerships like the one with GISPlan, he added that the university aimed to create substantial opportunities, particularly for tackling the pressing issue of youth unemployment in the country. He said the partnership marked a crucial first step not only for BUAN but for the future of the youth and the nation’s economic progress, calling for a unified effort among all stakeholders to realise the partnership’s potential.
The agreements, he added, also represented a pivotal moment for BUAN as it sought to harness technology and innovation to create meaningful impacts while contributing to the global economy.
In his remarks, Professor Branko Cavric, managing director of GISPlan, shared insights about the organisation’s focus on client-driven expertise in various fields, including urban and environmental planning, eco-tourism and land management.
He explained that GISPlan combined leading-edge technologies such as GIS, drones and artificial intelligence with a deep understanding of development processes in both built and natural environments.
Highlighting the importance of the collaboration, Professor Cavric said GISPlan’s effective partnerships within local and international communities enabled them to deliver comprehensive services. He also noted that affiliated businesses like the EMP Geneses Group played a vital role in transforming Botswana’s agricultural landscape by introducing products that supported economic diversification.
