'Ceasefire Now': The African Union Urges Israel to Comply With the ICJ's Verdict

Africa-Press – Botswana. On May 24, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Israel must cease its military offensive in Rafah and any actions detrimental to the city’s populace. The court also ordered Israel to keep the Rafah crossing point open to provide aid to the Palestinian population.

Recent Israeli strikes in Rafah violate UN court rulings, the African Union stated.

“With horrific overnight airstrikes killing mostly Palestinian women & children trapped in a displacement camp in Rafah, the State of Israel continues to violate international law with impunity and in contempt of an ICJ ruling two days ago ordering an end to its military action in Rafah. The ICJ order must be urgently enforced if global order is to prevail,” said the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AU), Moussa Faki Mahamat, on his X account.

On Monday night, Israel launched an attack on Rafah, with eight rockets hitting a tent camp and causing a fire. According to Palestinian news agency WAFA, at least 40 people, mostly women and children, were killed.

The Israel Defense Forces, in turn, reported that it eliminated the head of Hamas’s West Bank headquarters and began investigating civilian casualties in the struck area.
