Africa-Press – Botswana. The Citizen Entrepreneurial Development Agency (CEDA) recently highlighted two of its most successful funded enterprises, both of which are making progress in Botswana’s health sector.
Established to promote citizen-owned businesses across all sectors through accessible and affordable financial assistance, CEDA showcased its impact by leading a media tour of selected funded projects.
Led by CEDA Communications Manager, Mr Disang Nage, the first stop was at the Renal Care Institute, founded by qualified nephrologist Dr Gagoitsewe Saleshando, in Gaborone.
Established in November 2008, the company specialises in chronic kidney healthcare services, offering peritoneal dialysis and haemodialysis to patients with end-stage renal failure. It has grown to become a premier service provider in the field of kidney disease.
With CEDA loans totalling over P13 million over the years, the institute now boasts two branches in Gaborone and has expanded its services to Molepolole and Kang.
The facility currently serves over 2000 government-sponsored patients, receiving haemodialysis treatment through a referral system from Princess Marina Hospital.
The institute also operates with a staff of 75 employees and 3 doctors, and houses 60 fully functional dialysis machines, 16 of which are located at the Molepolole branch.
The second stop was at Kalafhi Day Hospital, a state-of-the-art smart hospital focused on outpatient procedures.
“Our focus is on pre-emptive and preventative care. Early discharge reduces the risk of hospital-acquired infections, and most people recover faster at home in a familiar environment,” said founding director Dr Matlhogonolo Mouwane, who added that the hospital aimed to operate 24 hours once all departments were fully functional.
CEDA extended a loan on June 29, 2022, funding critical infrastructure and equipment for departments such as nephrology and dialysis, oncology, general practice, surgical theatres, ophthalmology, neurology, radiology, and a medical gases plant.
“Kalafhi began with just one consultation room, one table, and a blood pressure machine,” said Dr Mouwane. Today, it has grown to include four clinics, three pharmacies, one aesthetic clinic (Renewal Aesthetics), and a fully operational hospital in the city, with several departments funded through CEDA support.
