Central Region Oversees 343 Schools

Africa-Press – Botswana. The number of schools currently under the Central Region, which has its headquarters in Serowe are 343, composing of 251 primary schools, two satellite schools, 81 junior secondary schools and 12 senior secondary schools.

Answering a question in Parliament recently, the Minister of Child Welfare and Basic Education, Ms Nono Kgafela-Mokoka said that the continued administration from Serowe contravened the policy as some matters in the districts which were supposed to be handled by the directors, were managed by chief education officers. Ms Kgafela-Mokoka stated that the Central Region had 10 sub-regional offices across eight districts of Serowe, Palapye, Boteti, Tutume, Mahalapye, Selebi Phikwe, Bobirwa and Tonota as a way of taking services closer to schools.

“We are however aligned that full decentralisation should be effected once it is financially prudent to do so,” she said.

Ms Kgafela-Mokoka was responding to a question from Nkange MP, Mr Motlhaleemang Moalosi who had requested the minister to explain when the ministry would establish regional offices in Tutume in accordance with government decentralisation policy.
