Africa-Press – Botswana. Serowe District has reported 176 disaster cases affecting over 1 023 across the district.
Speaking during full council meeting, Serowe District Council (SDC) chairperson Mr Atamelang Thaga highlighted the ongoing interventions aimed at alleviating the impact of these disasters, which included the distribution of 125 food baskets, 13 tents, and 10 tarpaulins.
Mr Thaga stated that SDC had incurred costs amounting to P145 000 for providing food baskets to eligible beneficiaries. Fortunately, he confirmed that there were no reported casualties or injuries, although the damage to property was significant. He emphasised the importance of recognising the collaborative efforts made by various stakeholders during these challenging times.
The Botswana Red Cross, in partnership with the Serowe District Disaster Preparedness Committee, has supplied vital support, which included the distribution of mattresses, blankets, hygiene packs, and P1 000 in cash to 100 flood-affected beneficiaries.
Areas benefitting from the assistance include Dimajwe, Mmashoro, Tshimoyapula, Moiyabana, Mabuo, Sehunou, and Motshegaletau villages. Mr Thaga said the district was likely to experience normal to above-normal rainfall from February to April 2025, with expected rainfall amounts ranging from 220.0 mm and temperatures between 29.6°C to 31.8°C.
He assured attendees that the Department of Meteorological Services was providing crucial updates and had initiated improvements in data collection, including the automation of four rain gauges at Serowe Police Station, Mabeleapodi, and Moiyabana Primary Schools. Mr Thaga urged residents to remain vigilant and offer assistance wherever possible.
“Collective responsibility is crucial in overcoming these challenges, and together, we can ensure the safety and well-being of our people during this difficult period,” he said.
Additionally, Mr Thaga informed councilors about establishment of the District Disability Office by the National Disability Coordinating Office, in response to the Persons with Disability Act of 2024. This landmark legislation aims to promote equal rights and opportunities for all individuals regardless of ability.
He explained that the act provided a comprehensive framework to safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities, focusing on eliminating barriers in education, employment, healthcare, and public services that have historically restricted their full participation in society.
The District Disability Office will oversee the accessibility of public facilities and services, raise awareness about the rights and needs of individuals with disabilities, and provide essential support services, including access to assistive devices, vocational training, and employment opportunities.
Mr Thaga indicated that the office would maintain an updated database of persons with disabilities within the district to guide policy and resource allocation, ensuring interventions are effective and responsive to community needs.
He concluded that the enactment of the Persons with Disability Act of 2024 marked a significant milestone in fostering inclusivity and emphasised that the District Disability Office is committed to translating the rights outlined in the Act into tangible improvements in the lives of persons with disabilities.
