Africa-Press – Botswana. Ghanzi leadership has been challenged to speak out about gender based violence (GBV).

“I do not want us to be statistics but I want you to bridge the gaps,” said Ghanzi District Council chairperson, Mr Jeremiah Tibi.

Speaking during the gender mainstreaming workshop in Ghanzi recently, Mr Tibi said consideration of gender mainstreaming during formulation and implementation of policies remained key.

He said partnership with stakeholders such as ministers fraternal and non-governmental organisations could help end GBV.

“We cannot work in silos and expect positive results,” he added.

“Botswana is committed to end GBV by 2030, but what are we doing at grass root level to ensure that the country achieve this?” he asked.

He, however, appealed to the community, particularly at family level to play their part in fighting GBV.

Mr Tibi said gender based violence was predominantly caused by gender inequality, adding that most prevalent forms of abuse in Ghanzi included emotional, physical and sexual abuses.

Meanwhile, gender affairs official, Mr Duncan Madiabaso regretted that some policies were implemented based on sexual orientation yet were designed to accommodate all people.

His colleague, Mr Tony Ramaretlwa said gender mainstreaming should be part of developmental plans.
