Africa-Press – Botswana. Kanye Ministers’ Fraternal gathered along A2 road at Ranaka junction recently to remember the tragic deaths of seven South African citizens who lost their lives in an accident.

During the ceremony, a plaque in the shape of a cross was unveiled by Kgosi Kebapetse Telekelo.

The seven South African individuals died in a devastating accident after attending a church service in Kanye on April 28.

Kgosi Telekelo emphasised the importance of prayers in reducing such tragedies caused by road accidents, acknowledging the work of the Ministers’ Fraternal in honouring the deceased.

Bishop Vivian Masibi, Chairperson of Kanye Ministers’ Fraternal from Pasalema 23 Church, highlighted the purpose of the event;to pray for the souls of the victims and to create a remembrance plaque for them.

“The relatives and friends would one day want to come and see where their loved ones died and this cross will make it easy for them,” she added.

Officials like Ms Keamogetse Segokgo, District Officer II and Chairperson of the Road Safety Committee, and Sejelo Station Commander, Superintendent Mogomotsi Matlapeng, emphasised the need for following road rules, ensuring roadworthiness of vehicles, and promoting a culture of road safety through education and awareness.

Ms Segokgo urged all to embrace President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi’s mind-set change and start thinking and doing things in a positive manner.

For his Superintendent Matlapeng said road accidents were caused by people and could be stopped by people, further urging various churches to preach road safety messages in their different platforms.

Most of the accidents, he said were caused by over speeding, drivers without licences as well as conduct of drivers on the roads such as use of cell phones and drunken driving.

Supt Matlapeng said it was vital for all to ensure that their vehicles were road worthy at all times and they followed road regulations to stop reduce accidents.

Other speakers also encouraged individuals to turn to prayer for guidance and protection on their journeys, while urging drivers to observe road safety measures and cooperate with authorities to prevent accidents in the future.

Pastor Okathusa Mashabane of Apostol Faith Mission advised congregants to ensure that they were informed on road safety matters.

He also asked them to learn from theirs and others experiences on the roads to avoid accidents, further highlighting the need for them to change their ways and do things in a positive manner.

“Accidents are caused by ignorant drivers and if we continue ignoring road safety measures we will continue loosing lives on our roads. Let us take responsibility as individuals and stop accidents,” he added.
