Africa-Press – Botswana. Social clubs have the potential to mould people into responsible citizens.
Speaking during the launch of Mmatshitshwane Social Club in Kanye on Saturday, deputy chairperson of Kanye District Council, Mr Sebati Kabomo highlighted that well managed clubs had the capacity to generate revenue that could be used to develop the community.
“When you work together towards one common goal, you can achieve a lot,” he said.
Mr Kabomo said non-communicable diseases could be fought through exercising, hence the social club was the right platform to attain such.
“A lot of money that is used by government to fight such diseases could be used for other developmental projects if people exercised to prevent them,” he added.
Pertaining to alcohol and drug abuse, he said the club was the right platform to advise the youth against such and eventually mould them into responsible future leaders.
The deputy chairperson urged the club to formulate a constitution that would guide them to successfully achieve their set goals.
Kgosi Gaokgakala Sennelo of Goologaba ward explained that the social club had the capacity to help in developing the village and to bring people together.
He highlighted that sport was not only about games, but also played a vital role in the fight against non-communicable diseases.
Kgosi Sennelo further thanked the residents for coming together and assisting government in developing the area.
For his part, the Club’s president said they intended to play a part in the development of their area and guide the youth to become responsible citizens.
“We aim to keep them engaged and away from social ills such as alcohol and drug abuse,” he said.
He also thanked the sponsors for assisting them, noting that the event’s success depended on their assistance.
Mmatshitshwane Social Club chairperson, Mr Phuthego Ramaribeng pointed out that one of their objectives was to work together in the fight against non-communicable diseases.
He said they also wanted to preserve their culture and exchange ideas on how to develop themselves as well as their area.
Ms Dorcus Radipitse, a nurse at Sebego Clinic highlighted that a few men visited health facilities, adding that the club would help in encouraging men to test for various illnesses.
