Africa-Press – Botswana. The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has advised the accounting officer of the Ministry of Trade and Entrepreneurship to provide the nation with a comprehensive update on the status of the Chema Chema programme.
Originally launched as a loan scheme to empower small entrepreneurs, the programme was recently paused to facilitate its transition into a grant facility, following procedural requirements.
Appearing before PAC on Thursday, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr Olesitse Masimega, informed the committee that the approved loans would be reviewed and reassessed in light of rising prices.
He also said that those who had not yet received approval should reapply once new guidelines were issued.
Mr Masimega indicated that the new guidelines were expected to be approved by July.
However, he was unable to confirm whether funds would be available for disbursement by that time. In response, PAC chairperson Mr Taolo Lucas advised Mr Masimega to issue a detailed communique to clarify the current status to the public.
