Africa-Press – Botswana. The construction of Mochudi Public Library is on complete stall following budget re-prioritisation.
Answering a question in Parliament on Thursday, the Minister of Labour and Home Affairs, Major General Pius Mokgware stated that the library was allocated funds, which were later withdrawn by the Minister of Finance.
He said during the Transitional National Development Plan in the 2024/2025 financial year, the former Ministry of Youth Gender, Sport and Culture was allocated funds amounting to P1million out of the P2 million to initiate the feasibility study, undertake project designs and conduct Environmental Impact Assessment for the library.
However, Maj. Gen. Mokgware said in that regard, expansion of the library would be considered in the current development of the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP), alongside other developments projects.
He further highlighted that the project was to be implemented in three phases at a total estimated cost of P68 million.
This cost, he said, included construction of staff houses as part of the project, adding that based on the fact that BETP was still at development, he is not able to confirm when the expansion of the library would be undertaken.
He was responding to a question from Kgatleng Central MP, Mr Mpho Morolong who had asked the minister about the intention to construct the long awaited Mochudi Public Library and to state the design costs as well as the estimated construction project costs.
