Africa-Press – Botswana. Following government’s decision to set aside P34.6 million for political party funding, it is important to come up with a legal document that will guide distribution of the funds as well as determine eligibility.
Officially opening an All Party Conference in Gaborone, Minister for State President, Mr Kabo Morwaeng said the meeting was solely to discuss the Draft Political Party Funding Bill and said a decision taken after consultation, whether in agreement or not was a true reflection of democracy.
“I want to assure you that we believe in consultation,” said Mr Morwaneng and noted that consultation was the cornerstone of nation building and democracy.
He said such had resulted in the birth of a draft bill that was brought before the conference for discussion. Mr Morwaeng said some politicians had in the past made contributions that gave birth to the draft bill, therefore, it was important to further engage political parties for further discussions before it being passed into a law. Event hough it was agreed during a previous gathering for the next conference to be held August 8, Mr Morwaeng said it was necessary to call it earlier, to discussing the bill before beginning of the winter Parliament.
He said finalising the bill well on time would ensure fair distribution of funds.
“We are here to take your views and ensure that you have a say in the bill. All your suggestions are welcome. We shall discuss the bill clause by clause, to incorporate all your suggestions,” said Mr Morwaeng and assured parties that the August 8 conference still stands.
In a different meeting convened July 4, Mr Morwaeng said they were confident that the bill would mature on time and be enacted before the general elections.
