Africa-Press – Botswana. Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) is in the process of appointing a Local Organising Committee that will deliver a successful Botswana Continental Tour to be held in April, in Gaborone.
The world athletics governing body, World Athletics, has given the BAA the rights to host the meet, which is expected to attract high profile athletes.
BAA vice president technical, Kenneth Kikwe said it is important for them to announce the LOC in earnest so that they could hit the ground running.
“This is a big event, therefore, we have to put our best foot forward so that we deliver a memorable event,” he said.
Kikwe said they have already submitted their budget to the government and other stakeholders who were willing to come on board to sponsor the event.
“We also submitted the timing equipment to the government so that they buy us a new one, and the Timetronics Company has already submitted the quotation to us, which we have already passed on to the Botswana National Sport Commission,” he said.
He said Thomas Ndadziila has already been appointed as the meet director, adding that they are confident that he would also deliver his assignment.
The vice president said they would also have to liaise with athletes through their managers, adding that the rules for hosting a gold meet requires that a meet should have a number of international athletes who are competitive and highly ranked.
“But we are happy that most of the athletes, even those who were competing at the Olympics have shown interest to come and compete in Botswana, and some of them even wrote on the social media,” he said.
The events to be staged in the men’s category are 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 400m Hurdles and 1 500m, long jump, javelin throw as well as 4x100m relay.
The women categories will be made up of 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m long jump and 1 500m, triple jump as well as 4x100m relay.
Kikwe said though some had requested that high jump be included in the programme, they are looking at the schedule, finalise it and send it to the World Athletics.
