Africa-Press – Botswana. The Kanye District Council is taking significant strides towards sustainable energy solutions with the introduction of biogas projects in Lorolwana and Dipotsana.

Addressing a full council meeting, Kanye District Council Chairperson Mr Morapedi Kgosithebe emphasised the importance of this initiative in promoting affordable, renewable energy that is environmentally friendly.

Mr Kgosithebe said the biogas projects aimed to meet energy demands while simultaneously fostering environmental conservation and stimulating economic growth within the district. He said Lorolwana Primary School would benefit from biogas for cooking and other energy needs, while the bio-slurry produced as a by-product would serve as organic fertilizer for the school garden, reinforcing sustainable agricultural practices.

By leveraging organic waste materials like cow dung for biogas production, Mr Kgosithebe said the projects were anticipated to diminish greenhouse gas emissions and present a cleaner alternative to conventional energy sources.

He said the initiative was expected to create job opportunities, particularly for those involved in collecting cow dung and managing the projects, thus aiding local economic development.

Mr Kgosithebe said the projects promised to improve living conditions by ensuring access to reliable and affordable energy, thereby fostering economic prospects within the community.
