Africa-Press – Botswana. Cuba has assured Botswana of its commitment to continue to providing medical personnel with specialised skills.

Speaking at the 60th anniversary celebration of the Cuban international medical collaboration on Tuesday, Cuban Ambassador, Mr Orlando Alvarez said the presence of Cuban health professionals in Botswana dated back to 1989.

“The work carried out during the years would have been impossible without the partnership of the government authorities, the Ministry of Health and welfare and the people of Botswana. To all of them we want to express our gratitude,” he said.

Mr Alvarez further stated that the international medical collaboration was one of the most beautiful pages that the Cuban revolution had written and had left a mark on the peoples of the world.

“Since the international medical collaboration formally began on May 23, 1963, so far Cuba has sent more than 600 000 professionals to 165 countries, more than two billion consultations have been carried out, about 15 million surgical operations and eight million lives had been saved,” he added.

As a result, he said, they would continue to strengthen the historical connections of medical collaboration with Botswana by providing high-quality support in a timely manner.

For his part, health policy, research and development director in the Ministry of Health, Mr Onkemetse Mathala expressed gratitude to Cuba for assisting towards attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals, mainly goal number three which entailed good health and wellbeing.

“Since then, more than a thousand Cuban health professionals have assisted Batswana across the country, to which the Ministry of Health and wellness is eternally grateful for the support,” he said.
