Africa-Press – Botswana. De Beers Group has donated office furniture and equipment worth more than P70 000 to Botswana Police Services (BPS).

Speaking at the handing over ceremony in Gaborone on December 18, BPS Deputy Commissioner – Operations, Mr Solomon Mantswe said the donation was relevant and timely, given the prevailing resource challenges confronting government against the increasing demand for quality service.

Mr Mantswe said the donation justified BPS strengthened partnership with the De Beers Group in protecting the diamonds.

To demonstrate this commitment, Mr Mantswe said BPS had amongst others, established a Diamond and Minerals Protection Unit (DMPU) in 2013 to ensure coordinated efforts towards protecting the diamond industry from criminals and ensuring professional case investigation.

“By so doing, we are equally preserving the identity, credibility and value of our diamond resource and guaranteeing its contribution towards the national development agenda,”he said. Mr Mantswe said BPS would continue to invest in the important security area, especially considering the ongoing localisation of key processes including beneficiation, sorting, polishing and sale of diamonds.

He said the improved office outlook would motivate officers to serve better and customers would in turn feel happy and secure to be served in such an improved and welcoming environment.

De Beers Group Senior Security Manager, Mr Mpho Mogodiri said in the spirit of collaboration and a collective vision for a safer Botswana, the De Beers Group took great pride in handing over the office furniture to the BPS.

Mr Mogodiri said the contribution underscored the group’s dedication to supporting law and order in the society, indicating that the commitment to Botswana transcended diamonds extraction.

He said their dedication extended to investing in the prosperity and security of the communities where they operated.

Moreover, he said the donation of furniture symbolised their belief in the power of collaboration between the private sector and law enforcement agencies.

Mr Mogodiri reiterated that the donation represented an investment in the resources necessary to enhance the capabilities of the BPS, ensuring that they could effectively safeguard communities.

He said through understanding the challenges faced by law enforcement in the ever-evolving landscape of public safety, De Beers aimed to empower the BPS, through equipping them to meet challenges head on and excel in their duties.

The donation included office chairs, cabinets, seater couches and gazebos.
