Africa-Press – Botswana. The Deputy Ombudsman of Botswana, Judge Beaulah Kgakgamatso Mguni, received her appointment this morning in line with the Ombudsman Act. She joins the Ombudsman to advance the mandate of the institution. Her arrival boosts the Office’s leadership capacity at a time when demand for administrative accountability continues to rise.

President Duma Boko said the Deputy Ombudsman role is a strategic step to widen the Office’s reach and improve its operational strength. He said the Office plans to increase its engagement with the private sector. He noted that the role will support this shift and create space for deeper oversight.

The President pointed to complex legal questions the Office faces. One question concerns whether fundamental rights can be waived through contract. He said this issue requires careful interpretation. He stressed the importance of principled guidance when public rights are at stake.

He urged the Office to build stronger capacity. He called for sharper investigative systems and faster responses to public complaints. He said the Office must remain consistent and reliable in its service to the public.

He raised concern about ongoing gaps in access to information within government institutions. He said these gaps create speculation and weaken trust. He encouraged stronger information systems that support transparency.

The Office of the Ombudsman plays a key role in promoting administrative justice and human rights in Botswana. It investigates maladministration in public institutions and in private entities that provide public services. Judge Mguni’s appointment strengthens this work and signals a renewed focus on accountability across sectors.
