Dikoloti Seeks Stakeholder Input on Agricultural Policy

Africa-Press – Botswana. Acting Minister of Lands and Agriculture, Dr Edwin Dikoloti, has called on all stakeholders to contribute actively to the review of the 1991 National Policy on Agricultural Development (NPAD). The consultation process was launched at Letlhakeng kgotla on Monday, marking the start of a nationwide effort to modernise agriculture and drive sustainable economic transformation.

Dr Dikoloti said the review aims to develop a policy that reflects current agricultural realities and practical experiences. He urged participants to share insights from their work in the sector, highlighting challenges, successes, and opportunities that can inform policy decisions.

Addressing key issues facing agriculture, the minister pointed to climate change, rising production costs, and other sectoral challenges. He stressed that a one-size-fits-all approach would not be effective, and the revised policy must promote diversity and adaptability in agricultural practices.

The minister emphasised the importance of research, development, and the adoption of new technologies as critical drivers of agricultural success. He highlighted that innovation and evidence-based strategies are essential to improving productivity, resilience, and competitiveness in Botswana’s agricultural sector.

Dr Dikoloti outlined the next steps in the review process, noting that nationwide consultations would be followed by an Agricultural Pitso. This forum will appraise stakeholder suggestions and help develop a comprehensive implementation plan for the revised NPAD. The goal is to create a forward-looking policy that supports sustainable growth, strengthens food security, and drives economic transformation through agriculture.
