Africa-Press – Botswana. Pharmacy and health retail chain, Dis-Chem, has donated sanitary pads to the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education as part of its corporate social responsibility efforts.
The Minister of Child Welfare and Basic Education, Ms Nono Kgafela- Mokoka conveyed gratitude to Dis-Chem for its generosity and commitment to supporting child welfare.
“It goes without saying that for many school girls, absence of basic sanitary products means missing classes or even dropping out of school,” she highlighted and added, “hence this initiative is the start of a long lasting relationship to stopping such a predicament.”
Ms Mokoka emphasised that distribution of the supplies would also mean the promotion of heath and dignity of girls, the breaking of silence and stigma around menstruation, education and more opportunities.
“No girl’s education should be put on hold because of something so basic and natural,” she stressed, and extended her appreciation to Dis-Chem customers who made the initiative possible by contributing the sanitary towels.
Dis-Chem’s representative, Mr Katlego Mokhosoa emphasised that no female child should have their learning hindered by biological circumstances.
“Especially in the rural areas, where we realised a great need for sanitary supplies,” he said.
He expressed gratitude to Dis-Chem customers, noting that customers would now be able to see where their donations were going.
Ms Lerato Mokgethi, a Guidance and Counselling teacher at Sir Seretse Khama Junior School, said the donations would go a long way in helping girls have a better school experience. She described the gesture as a positive initiative that would have lasting impact in many girls’ lives.
