Africa-Press – Botswana. Minister for International Relations Dr Phenyo Butale has called on Botswana’s envoys to play a leading role in securing economic value for the country in a highly competitive global environment. He stressed that diplomacy must now deliver measurable economic outcomes that support national development. Ambassadors and high commissioners are expected to actively promote trade, investment and strategic partnerships. This shift positions diplomacy as a key driver of growth, competitiveness and long term national prosperity.
Dr Butale made the remarks during the inaugural induction programme for newly appointed Ambassadors and High Commissioner Designates. The programme was held in Gaborone on January 19 and marked a critical step in preparing envoys for foreign postings. He urged participants to clearly understand Botswana’s foreign policy direction under the new government. You are expected to represent a nation that is progressive, credible and economically focused. The induction programme aimed to strengthen readiness for complex international assignments.
Human rights featured strongly in Dr Butale’s address. He reaffirmed the new government’s commitment to human rights as a core pillar of Botswana’s international engagement. He noted that respect for human rights enhances trust and credibility on the global stage. Envoys were reminded that principled diplomacy strengthens relations with governments, investors and multilateral institutions. You must consistently reflect Botswana’s values of dignity, equality and the rule of law.
Dr Butale also emphasized resilience, agility and quality service delivery in diplomatic missions. He highlighted that global uncertainty demands diplomats who can adapt quickly to change. You are expected to identify opportunities while managing risks in dynamic environments. Quality service delivery was described as essential in supporting citizens abroad and engaging international partners. Diplomatic missions must be efficient, responsive and results driven.
He concluded by urging envoys to embrace a modern, inclusive and development oriented approach to diplomacy. Collaboration with the private sector, diaspora communities and development partners was strongly encouraged. You are expected to actively position Botswana as an attractive destination for investment, tourism and innovation. This approach aims to secure sustainable economic dividends for the country. Botswana’s diplomacy, he stressed, must deliver value while remaining anchored in strong national principles.
