Africa-Press – Botswana. First National Bank Botswana (FNB) and the Botswana Green Building Council (BotGBC) have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at accelerating the country’s green transition by promoting and unlocking opportunities for affordable green housing.
FNB’s Retail Banking director, Ms Monkgogi Mogorosi, said during the signing ceremony on August 12 that the agreement demonstrated that sustainability and profitability could coexist.
She emphasised the bank’s eagerness to make affordable green housing accessible to all Batswana through environmental, social and governance aligned financial products.
“We will work together to develop products that will enhance Batswana’s lives and help address many societal problems we face today,” she said.
She said partnership with the Botswana Green Building Council would help shape and build a climate-resilient and inclusive environment, aligned with Vision 2036 pillars and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Ms Mogorosi noted that the agreement was aligned with the bank’s duty to positively impact society through its operations.
“At FNB, we believe it is our duty to take the lead in positively impacting society through our operations on a day to day basis,” she said.
She said collaboration reinforced FNB Botswana’s position as a solutions-driven financier, delivering on its promise of shared prosperity and laying the foundation for an inclusive, climate-resilient economy that benefits every Motswana.
Botswana Green Building Council president, Ms Tebogo Modisagape said the signing would serve as a springboard in the country’s green building journey, advancing Botswana’s sustainability goals by integrating green finance, certified building practices, and professional training into FNB’s offerings.
Ms Modisagape said the collaboration promoted environmental, social and governance aligned financing, developed local expertise, and supports low carbon, resource efficient developments aligned to Botswana’s national determined contributors
The 12 month agreement includes FNB onboarding BotGBC as a technical partner, joining forces to unlock opportunities that promote affordable green housing, ESG-aligned financial products, public awareness campaigns, and policy advocacy.
