Africa-Press – Botswana. Badminton, a sport that remains relatively under recognised in Botswana, saw a display of talent at the Tonota Junior Open Badminton Championships, with two Rauwe Primary School pupils, Jamorena Patson and Loago Pilane, emerging as champions.
The duo showcased their skills, capturing top honours in multiple categories and capturing the attention of spectators who throughout the event.
Jamorena aged 11, clinched the title in the boys’ singles, while 12 year-old Loago triumphed in the girls’ singles category.
Their performances established them as the overall champions of the tournament.
Jamorena fought fiercely against One Gabaitire, also from Rauwe Primary School, winning the final match with a score of 22-18.
His agility and technique made him a standout player throughout the competition.
Similarly, Loago excelled in the girls’ singles, outperforming her closest rival, Gofaone Keakile, also from Rauwe primary, ultimately winning the final match 22-16.
One came second in the boys’ singles and Lefang Gabonamong, third.
In the girls’ singles, Gofaone took second place followed by Prisca Daniel in third.
In the mixed doubles category, the combination of Jamorena and Loago proved formidable.
The duo defeated One and Prisca in the final, demonstrating synergy and skill that left the audience in awe.
They also impressed in the boys’ and girls’ doubles events. Jamorena teamed up with One, while Loago partnered with Prisca, showcasing their versatility and teamwork.
BBA public relations officer, Thobo Tshosa, commended the two-day tournament as a resounding success and was happy that the sponsor came through for them.
Tshosa noted that while badminton was not as popular, with government and sponsors, it was a platform for Batswana to show their talent on the world stage.
If well-managed, badminton is instrumental in developing children’s cognitive and physical skills, Tshosa said.
