Africa-Press – Botswana. A draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Botswana and South Korea in areas of sport is currently being developed, says Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) CEO, Tuelo Serufho.
Speaking in an interview, he said if all went well, it would be presented to respective governments for consideration by February end.
Serufho, who was part of the Botswana delegation, which went on a three-day visit to South Korea recently, said with South Korea being good in sports such as taekwondo, golf, basketball and volleyball, they had no doubt that the MoU would bring a lot of positives.
He said it was hoped that some of Botswana’s athletes would benefit from the MoU even before the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Serufho further said during the visit that was spearheaded by South Korea, a series of meetings were held where experiences were shared and future plans discussed, with a view to give rise to collaborations between the visiting countries and South Korea, as well as establishing bilateral relations that should see sport changing for the better in the future.
“It was a fruitful mission and we’ve learnt quite a lot and one of the highlights was how sport is funded in that country, mainly through a sport specific lottery that is managed by the Korean Sport Promotion Foundation,” he said.
In addition, he said areas of collaborations discussed included scholarships for athletes to high performance centres and universities, training camps, capacity development and the establishment of a sport museum, amongst others.
Some of the South Korean institutions with which meetings were also held included the Korean Institute of Sport Science and the Korea National Sport University.
Delegations were also taken on a tour of some legacy projects of mega sport events that South Korea hosted in the past such as the Seoul 1998 Olympic Games and the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games.
Other countries, which visited South Korea were Bhutan, Kosovo, Kazakhstan, Lesotho, Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Mexico, Mongolia, India and Zambia.
The Botswana delegation included Serufho, Ministry of Youth, Gender, Sport and Culture – Policy Specialist, Moreetsi Bogosi and BNSC Sport Development Manager – Administration, Kealeboga Keitseng.
