Africa-Press – Botswana. Okavango West Member of Parliament, Mr Kenny Kapinga has underscored the importance of eliminating corruption from the lowest to the highest structures in the country.
Mr Kapinga said some pending projects especially roads such as the Sehithwa-Mohembo Road required urgent attention. He said such major projects should be awarded to capable companies with sound track records and should not be awarded on the basis of local empowerment only.
Mr Kapinga was contributing during the National Planning Commission’s consultation meeting on the National Development Plan 12, with the Okavango District leadership in Shakawe yesterday.
Nominated councillor, Mr Osefelepelo Gaebolae advocated for the youth to be included in decision-making processes. Mr Gaebolae said industrialisation if embraced would help improve the Okavango District achieve economic prosperity. Another nominated councilor. Mr Lekonne Masoko said government should fasttrack the decentralisation process of councils, as that would reduce bureaucracy.
Samochima Kgosi Osenotse Koloi, for his part, said the Okavango District had rich natural resources which should be explored to benefit its people. Kgosi Koloi also said dikgosi should be recognised the same as councils and landboards in decision-making.
In his presentation, Minister for State President Mr Moeti Mohwasa implored the public service to change the way they did things and adopt methods that would help the country achieve its development goals.
Mr Mohwasa said there was need to do away with bottlenecks and bureaucracy that hindered effectiveness adding that the public service needed work on service delivery as that would also improve the living standards of Batswana.
He said the civil service should guard against corruption, tribalism, unfairness and victimisation based on political orientation but put forward the interests of the public. Such he said would be possible if they worked in unison with the community and the private sector.
Mr Mohwasa, who is on a countrywide tour to solicit ideas that will shape the National Development Plan 12, said consultations would inform the NDP 12 as well as take into consideration the ambitions of the ruling party.
